PAM LOSES HER HAIR FOR CHARITY

When BLUSH client Pamela Kester (soon to be 30) who grew up in Yateley with Caroline Hinton, who owns BLUSH hair nails and beauty in Sandhurst, decided to shave off her long locks of hair for the charity, Mind, she asked her old friend if she would do it. Pam wanted her hair shaved off to mark an important milestone so that she could raise both awareness and sponsorship. So far she is well on her way to raising £1,300 and the hair that has been cut off is also going to charity – http://www.littleprincesses.org.uk/ who make wigs for children who lose their hair because of cancer treatment.

Having spent most of her adult life battling severe depression Pamela, who now lives in Bordon, was keen to have her head shaved this October because it is exactly a year since she was hospitalised for four weeks with one of her most severe bouts of illness. Since being discharged in November Pam has continued to receive support and treatment for Disassociation Disorder.

Pamela says, “I went through a range of treatments last year and I am feeling very well now so I decided to make people aware of Mind and chose to have my head shaved so that people could sponsor me too. The charity works to improve life and conditions for people with all kinds of mental health issues and also provides information and support, including a support phone number for people in crisis.

“They also provide lots of information for people who live with those suffering from mental health issues which helped my husband to understand my condition. They also produce an amazing book that was brilliant to explain my illness to my children.”

Continues Pam, “Like a lot of people reading my story, I had no idea what Disassociation Disorder was or meant, so I was really glad when I discovered the Mind website which helped me to understand that my condition meant that my memory was affected. I have since used Mind in a number of ways and find their website very helpful, not only for myself but also for those people who support me.

“I know that there are many people suffering from mental health issues throughout the UK who do not get the help and support that they need in order to recover as I am doing. Mind is lobbying government and other agencies to ensure that mental health issues are getting the time they deserve.”

If anyone would like to sponsor Pamela her fundraising page is www.virginmoneygiving.com/Shavemymind.

Says Caroline, “I found it a very humbling experience to shave Pamela’s head. I said yes I would do it for her and then I was very nervous on the day, so after initial support from our hair stylist Nykita I then just got on with it. I’m glad to say that her new short crop look really does suit her. We are also going to see how we can support http://www.littleprincesses.org.uk/ by donating other clients’ hair to the charity if clients wish us to do so.
